Embracing the Power of Schedules: A Personal Perspective
For the past two decades, my family and I have navigated the intricate world of DDD (Division of Developmental Disabilities) services for my daughter. We have spent countless hours, day and night, navigating the system to find answers to our questions and trying to determine the best ways to work as a family to allow my daughter to have a fulfilled and joyful life. The journey has not been easy but it has brought us closer together as a family and strengthened our resolve to continue our advocacy for my daughter and so many other people like her who are navigating a world that is not yet as inclusive as it should be. Embracing schedules has been a journey, one that has provided outcomes that have been better than imagined.
Over time, I realized that a key aspect to our success has been the creation of schedules. Don’t get me wrong, I know schedules can be overwhelming and at times frustrating, especially if it is not something you particularly enjoy making and sticking to. I understand that schedules can sometimes evoke concerns or anxieties, but I’m here to share how they can truly be a game-changer for members in need of additional support.
When I took the initiative to create a detailed schedule for my daughter, it wasn’t merely a formality; it became a powerful tool in ensuring she received the level of care and assistance tailored to her specific needs. What struck me the most was how this schedule illuminated the gaps in her care throughout the day, highlighting moments where additional support or services were necessary. This clarity not only helped me better understand her needs but also facilitated more productive discussions with her support coordinator regarding the level of care required.
Contrary to misconceptions, the schedule is not designed to strip away services; rather, it serves as a proactive measure to identify areas where more support can be provided. It empowers both families and support coordinators to advocate effectively for the comprehensive care and assistance that every member deserves. Once I realized how powerful and effective scheduling was, I took advantage of it and it not only helped my daughter but it has facilitated better care, communication and involvement from everyone around her. Embracing the power of schedules truly made the difference.
My advice? Embrace the schedule. This tool is here for the empowerment of families and caregivers as well as the members and serves as an enhancement within the DDD framework. I truly believe that utilizing schedules will ensure that every member receives the attention and support they need to not just make it through the day, but to thrive and live a joyful and fulfilling life.
